Our name

An arrastra turned rock into gold, one lap at a time.

Before big industrial mills, prospectors across Mexico and the American Southwest built arrastras: a stone-lined pit, a post in the center, a beam, and heavy drag stones pulled in circles until raw ore gave up its gold. The word comes from the Spanish arrastrar, “to drag.”

It was simple, built on the spot from what was at hand, and it worked because it never stopped turning. That’s how we build: patient, repeated work that turns raw ideas into something worth keeping.

The post and beamThe steady center everything turns around.
The drag stonesOur products, doing the grinding.
The trailsThe progress worn in, lap after lap. Together they make our mark.
In a word

Three words behind the names.

Both names come from the mining camps of the Southwest. An arrastra ground the ore; a bonanza was what everyone hoped to find.

arrastra
ah·RAHS·truh
noun
  1. A simple mill for grinding ore: a circular, stone-lined pit where heavy stones are dragged around a center post, crushing rock until its gold or silver can be recovered.
  2. Patient, repeated work that turns raw material into something of value.

From Spanish arrastrar, “to drag.” Used across colonial Mexico and the American Southwest.

bonanza
buh·NAN·zuh
noun
  1. A rich vein or pocket of ore in a mine.
  2. A source of sudden wealth or good luck; a windfall.

From Spanish bonanza, “fair weather, prosperity.” Miners in the American West gave it the sense of striking it rich.

boondocking
BOON·dok·ing
noun
  1. Camping off the grid, usually for free on public land, with no hookups or campground: just you, your rig and the view.

From boondocks, “remote country,” borrowed from Tagalog bundok, “mountain.”

boondocking + bonanza = Boonanza: the free spot that turns out to be the find of the trip.
